University Health Center Influenza Health Alert:

Due to the recent increase in Flu cases on the TAMU-CC campus and across the United States, we are asking students who are exhibiting symptoms of the flu to call our office immediately! The student can speak to a nurse at (361) 825-2601 during regular work hours. If the student is calling outside regular work hours, the number to call is (361) 825-2601 and press option #2. Option #2 will access CareNet, the afterhours nurse line. If the student is not experiencing urgent symptoms but still feels the need to see a provider at the Health Center, he/she is urged to call and speak to a nurse about the symptoms first to determine urgency. This will help decrease exposure of our students to the flu virus. Priority will be given to those with urgent medical issues.

Symptoms of the flu may include:

  • sudden onset of fever >100.4
  • body aches
  • chills
  • headache
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

Preventative measures include:

  • Annual flu vaccine
  • Avoiding sick people
  • Washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs
  • If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others
  • Prescription medications called antiviral drugs can treat the flu
  • If you are in close contact to someone with the flu, antiviral drugs can be taken prophylactically

The Health Center recommends that all students who have not received the flu vaccine do so at this time. The Health Center can provide flu vaccines that protect against 4 types of flu viruses that may be in circulation for $20.

**If you have already had the flu, we still recommend the flu vaccine since it is possible to contract more than one type of flu virus in a flu season.
