Zelda Y. Chacon, MSN, FNP-BC, Interim Director

Zelda Y. Chacon has been the Associate Director of the Health Center since July of 2011 and is currently serving as Interim Director.   She began her career in 1998 as a Registered Nurse with Driscoll Children’s Hospital. She completed a Master of Science in Nursing Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2004. She worked as a FNP with the Children’s Clinic in Portland, TX, and then returned to Driscoll Children's Hospital to work in the Diabetes and Endocrine Center. At Driscoll Children's Hospital she was a member of the core team that created the first Adolescent Lap-Band Program. She went on to work with Coastal Bend Emergency Services at Driscoll Children's Hospital and most recently served as the Senior Nurse Practitioner at the Corpus Christi–Nueces County Public Health Department.

Shelley Martinez-Lopez, RN, Assistant Director

Shelley Martinez-Lopez has been the Assistant Director of the University Health Center since August 2016. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in December of 1997 and she immediately began her career at Driscoll Children’s Hospital where she worked for over 18 years. She has experience working in the Endo/Diabetes/Respiratory Unit, the Primary Care Services Clinic, Day Surgery Department (as the hospital's pre-op nurse), and the Ambulatory Orthopedic Clinic. She served as charge nurse at the hospital for several years before joining the TAMUCC University Health Center.

Dr. Jennifer Amaral

Dr. Jennifer Amaral received her medical degree at Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. She completed her Pediatric Residency Program at Driscoll Children's Hospital through Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, Texas.  She continued her education at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas Children Hospital in Houston, Texas, where she obtained her fellowship in Endocrinology and Diabetes.  Dr. Amaral returned to Driscoll Children's Hospital to serve the population of South Texas including Corpus Christi, Alice, Victoria, Rio Grande Valley, and Laredo.  After 6 years with Driscoll Children's Hospital, she is currently in private practice and joined the TAMU-CC University Health Center in 2012.

Valerie Y. Serna, MSN, FNP-C

Valerie Y. Serna completed a Master of Science Degree in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi in May, 2015. She obtained her Registered Nursing license in 1999 and began her career working in Women’s Health as a staff nurse at Baptist Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.  In 2001 she returned to Corpus Christi and began working as Charge Nurse for the Day Surgery Unit at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. In 2002 she went on to work in the Pediatric Orthopaedic Clinic at Driscoll Children’s Hospital where she served as clinic charge nurse for 7 years. In her most recent years, Valerie has worked for CCISD and Texas A & M University as the School Nurse at the Early Childhood Development Center on campus. Valerie joined the Texas A&M University Health Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner in June 2015.

Melinda Martinez, RN

Melinda Martinez is a registered nurse that graduated from the nursing program at Del Mar College in May of 1992. She worked in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis for over two years and then was employed by the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health Department for 17 years where she acquired vast experience with women's health. She is married with 2 children. Melinda has been with the TAMU-CC University Health Center since March 2012.

Christi Ortiz, RN

Christi Ortiz is a Registered Nurse who graduated from the nursing program at Del Mar College in 2006.  She has an Associates Degree in Biology from Cisco College and is an alumni of TAMU-CC receiving her undergraduate degree in psychology.  Christi worked for Christus Spohn Hospital as a nurse for eight years until she joined the TAMU-CC University Health Center in August 2014.

Nancy Smith, RN

Nancy Smith is a registered nurse who received her nursing degree in 2006 from Collin College. She began her career after accepting an Emergency Department internship at HCA’s Medical Center of Plano and worked in the Emergency Department, a designated Stroke, Chest Pain and Trauma Center, until transferring to Texas Health Presbyterian Plano’s Cardiology Services. In 2010 she moved with her family to Corpus Christi and has worked as a pediatric nurse at Driscoll Children’s Hospital and an ambulatory care nurse at the Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi before joining Texas A&M University in September of 2014.

Kim Trejo, NCMA

Kimberly Trejo graduated in 2011 as a Certified Medical Assistant from Everest Institute in Austin, Texas. She worked at Baylor Scott & White Hospital as a Certified Medical Assistant for 3 years. She worked in Ob-Gyn and Dermatology during that time, before moving to Refugio, Texas. She joined the TAMU-CC University Health Center February 2016. Kimberly is married with 2 children.

Debra Busey

Debra Busey is the Medical Receptionist for the TAMU-CC University Health Center. She is also a Certified Pharmacy Technician and Medical Administrative Assistant. Before moving back to Corpus and joining the UHC staff in 2013, she worked 10 years for a diabetic DME company in Houston. Debbie enjoys volunteering for Nueces County Fair and the Houston Rodeo.

Amy Perry

Amy Perry earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Missouri Southern State University in 1999.  Her accounting experience includes work in education, manufacturing, and retail.  In 2009, she moved to Corpus Christi from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and worked as an Accounting Assistant at Del Mar College’s Center for Economic Development before joining the TAMUCC University Health Center in 2012.
